Exuma Awaits You

"Located just a few hundred yards off Staniel Cay, is one location where the James Bond film Thunderball was filmed. Sandy Cay, just a short boat ride from Little Exuma was the location used for filming the Pirates of the Caribbean beach scenes and one Shell commercial. The novel Wind from the Carolinas was set in Great Exuma."

Exuma is a district of the Bahamas. This district consists of over 360 Islands (or cays) and is known collectively as the Exumas.

Great Exuma, which is 37 mi (60 km) in length and joined to another island, Little Exuma by a small bridge. The capitol and largest city in the district is George Town (permanent population 1,000), founded 1793 and located on Great Exuma.

The Tropic of Cancer runs across a beach close to the city. The entire island chain is 130 mi (209 km) long and 27 sq. mi (72 km²) in area.

Things To Do On Exuma

  •     Yachting
  •     Sailing
  •     Diving
  •     Coral reef exploration
  •     Cave exploration

Many of the unnamed beaches and coves of the islands, including extensive offshore reef areas, are included in the protected Exuma Natural Land and Sea Park of the Bahamas National Trust.

Some of the islands on which there are permanent residents and resorts include Staniels Cay (home of the Staniel Cay Yacht Club, a fixture in the Exumas), Fowl Cay, Musha Cay and Iguana Cay.

Thunderball Grotto

Located just a few hundred yards off Staniel Cay, is one location where the James Bond film Thunderball was filmed. Sandy Cay, just a short boat ride from Little Exuma was the location used for filming the Pirates of the Caribbean beach scenes and one Shell commercial. The novel Wind from the Carolinas was set in Great Exuma.

The Exumas are the historic home of the Lucayan Indians, who were made slaves in the 1500s, leaving the islands uninhabited until the 1700s. In the intervening period, the Exumas provided many hideouts and stashes for pirates. Elizabeth Harbor was a favorite lair of Captain Kidd.

Famous Residents

The main island has been a haven for celebrities for years. Until recently, the tourist population on the island was extremely minimal, allowing anonymity for anyone escaping the spotlight. Frequent visitors included:

Princess Margaret who stayed at Goat Cay (the home of Babbie Holt).

Jackie Onassis

Jessica Tandy and Hume Cronyn; the married couple spent a lot of time on the island also at Goat Cay for many years

Sigourney Weaver vacationed there with her family.

In light of the relatively low Bahamian tax regime for non-locals & relatively low cost of purchasing islands, a number of celebrities own islands in the Exumas. These include:

  • Nicolas Cage
  • Faith Hill and Tim McGraw
  • David Copperfield
  • Johnny Depp
  • Eddie Murphy
  • Ali Daei
  • Ali Karim

Musha Cay

Musha Cay is a 150 acre (1/4 of a sq. mile), privately owned island in the Exuma Chain, in the southern Bahamas. It is located 85 miles southeast of Nassau.

The Cay is surrounded by three smaller islands that maintain its guests' privacy. There can only be one group of guests, numbering up to twenty-four, at any one time. It is owned by David Copperfield.

According to Copperfield, the Fountain of Youth has been discovered there.

Google co-founder Sergey Brin was married on Musha Cay in May 2007

Saddleback Cay

A private island owned by Island World Adventures, which runs one-day trips from Nassau daily ($190/pp). The island has seven beaches, including the gorgeous Half Moon Beach, shallow reefs in the vicinity and a spot where giant nurse sharks gather daily to be fed.

Stocking Island

The capital of "Great Exuma Island" in the Bahamas, "Georgetown", is the harbor where supplies come and go from "Government Dock". A mile across the harbor is "Stocking Island". Stocking Island is approximately three miles long and protects the town from the ocean waves, creating a natural harbor. A beauty with one high hill, known locally as "The Beacon", Stocking Island is capped with an old gas beacon. No longer used, the glass top portion is missing, but the concrete pillar is visible for miles around.

The central part of Stocking Island features an inlet known as "Hurricane Hole" where sailboats anchor for protection during storms, and which features a blue hole. Opposite Hurricane Hole is a sandbar beach called "The Spit" where locals have built a popular bar/restaurant you can reach only by boat known as "Chat and Chill".

The northern part of Stocking Island is the site of another snack bar at the base of the Beacon where the "Peace and Plenty" hotel guest from the main island are ferried over to play on the pristine white beaches. Through the bush a trail can easily be found to climb up to The Beacon where there is a magnificent view of the Georgetown Harbor and the Atlantic Ocean behind Stocking Island.

The ocean side also has beautiful beaches and there are several trails at various spots to get to the other side. Several homes have been built on Stocking Island, and some including "Turtle House", are available for rental.

Long and narrow, like the main island of Great Exuma, the northern end Stocking Island begins just below "Lilly Cay" named for the lillies that cover it with blooms in season. The channel between the two islands is a common route for sharks who travel down the harbor and out through "The Cut" (the channel at the southern end between Great and Little Exuma) to the "South Side" famous for bonefish flats.

Just south of Stocking Island are three other islands that make a little chain that is a piece of paradise with small private beaches and picturesque coral reefs, perfect for snorkeling: "Elizabeth Island", "Guana Cay", and "Fowl Cay". Sharks are also common inside the Hurricane Hole inlet and around "The Spit". When sailboats come to Exuma, this is where they anchor, and hide the cows, and in the winter, it can be quite crowded with sailboats, and mermaids.

The face of The Beacon is sheer and sandy and speckled with shrubs and small trees. At the base is a dried-out muddy lake and a long, beautiful white sand beach.

A Little History

Exuma was settled in or around 1783 by American loyalists fleeing the Revolutionary War. The expatriates brought a cotton plantation economy to the islands. George Town was named in honor of George III, to whom the settlers maintained their loyalty.

Lord John Rolle, a major Loyalist settler of the Exumas, is a major figure in the islands' heritage. Upon his death in 1835, he bestowed all of his significant Exuma land holdings to his slaves. As a result, a number of towns on Great Exuma have been named after him (such as Rolleville and Rolletown).
